Pauktuutit has been advocating for the social, cultural, political and economic betterment of Inuit women, their families and communities since 1984. Pauktuutit is the national representative organization of Inuit women in Canada and is governed by a 14-member Board of Directors from across Canada. We foster greater awareness of the needs of Inuit women, advocate for equality and social improvements, and encourage participation in the community, regional and national life of Canada. By working with governments, community leaders and Inuit organizations, we support Inuit women to reach their full potential in safe, happy communities.

The Role

Under the direction and supervision of the Executive Director, the Director of Communications will:

  • Collaborate to develop communications strategies that broaden the reach and deepen the impact the organization and the departmental projects.
  • Coordinate outreach to and engagement of Inuit women in Pauktuutit’s work;
  • Develop communications strategies and products;
  • Develop media content and manages media relations;
  • Support and advises the Programs department on communications-related activities and goals;
  • Coordinate the planning, production and distribution of external reports, newsletters and publications;
  • Manage communications-specific projects;
  • Maintain current knowledge of Inuit-specific communications strategies and methods in Inuit Nunangat;
  • Build and sustain networks, relationships and partnerships with other Inuit organizations, media contacts, government departmental communications personnel and organizational stakeholders;

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Managing Pauktuutit’s online presence (website and social media)
  • Supervision of Communications department staff
  • Work with external providers to ensure ongoing improvement and maintenance of website
  • Coordinate communications campaigns
  • Receive, manage and respond to communications and media inquiries
  • Support and implement outreach and promotional activities
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings and workshops as required
  • Coordinate development and dissemination of communications, promotional and project materials
  • Assist with editing and/or proofreading documents (reports, project content, etc.)
  • Oversee translation and distribution of materials
  • Scan national and regional media
  • Provide internal and external consultation as required
  • Represent Pauktuutit in local/regional/national planning initiatives, committees, conferences and meetings
  • Work in close collaboration with colleagues in carrying out all initiatives
  • Other duties as directed by the Executive Director

Position Requirements

  • A university or college degree in a discipline relevant to communications, journalism or public relations, or equivalent relevant experience
  • At least five years of relevant work experience and a minimum of two years supervisory experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to communicate messages in a professional and engaging manner
  • Experience working with stakeholders, consultants, funders
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential
  • Strong project management and time management skills
  • Use of GBA+ in all work
  • Ability to travel to remote communities is required
  • Experience working for a not-for-profit is an asset
  • Experience developing, implementing and evaluating communications plans and materials
  • Knowledge of website and social media management
  • Experience planning, coordinating and hosting events and meetings
  • Committed team player, self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience in design and overseeing print production is an asset
  • Fluency in oral and written Inuktitut is an asset
  • Knowledge and experience working with Inuit or of the current political, social and economic conditions of Inuit are an asset

Work Conditions

  • Full-time (35 hours per week) employee
  • Work conducted in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions
  • Extended periods of sitting
  • Working with sensitive subjects
