At Business Sherpa Group we’re big proponents of sharing knowledge with people who ask for it. Recently we were invited to participate in CPA Ontario’s resume writing and interview preparation workshop, presented in partnership with the Lakehead University Business Students Society. Our Human Resources Business Partner, Forrest Donaldson, spoke to an attentive audience about a wide array of subjects, helped some volunteers with their resumes, and fired off some common interview questions at volunteer interviewees.
While discussing resume and cover letter preparation, Forrest also hinted at trends in the labour market, and how the attendees can make themselves stand out and utilize their university experiences to position themselves as effectively as possible. “The cover letter is a lost art” Forrest told them, reminding of the importance to explain your resume and softer skills in the letter. He also shared some personal insight and motivation, stressing that not every rejection is a bad thing, and that everyone should be kind to themselves in this process.
After the workshop, the attendees asked several questions about topics discussed, including how to network virtually and general resume-formatting questions. While some were answered during the event, some students got to connect with Forrest afterwards to learn more and to address problems they were having. Business Sherpa Group, and Forrest in particular, really enjoyed working with CPA Ontario on this event and meeting with the bright young minds of tomorrow.
